Bio:
Cheryl Batagol was born on a dairy farm in South Gippsland.
Cheryl began working in the waste management industry in 1968 in a family waste collection company. She worked in the waste management service sector in both medium sized private and large public companies since that time (having some time off for family) until 2000 when she retired from Brambles Australia Ltd’s Cleanaway division.
Since 2004 she has been the Chairman of Melbourne Water and has served on the Boards of City West Water and Southern Rural Water (servicing the Macalister Irrigation District). She has been a board member of EcoRecycle Victoria since 1996, was its Chair from 2003-05 and is now Deputy Chair of its successor, Sustainability Victoria. She is Chair of the Sustainability Fund Advisory Panel (advising the Victorian Treasurer and Minister for the Environment).
In June 2006 she was appointed as a board member of the Victorian Catchment Management Council and a Board Member of Tintern Schools in 2007.
Cheryl is a Victorian Councillor for the Australian Industry Group, a member of the Plastics and Chemicals Industry Association’s Communications and Advisory Council and a Trustee of the Sustainable Melbourne Fund (City of Melbourne). She is a member of the City of Melbourne’s Future Melbourne Reference Group.
She was a council member on EPA’s Environment Council and was a general councillor of the Victorian Farmers Federation.
Cheryl was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2000 for her services to the water industry and sustainability and the Australian Waste Management Association John Guice award for service to the waste management industry. She was an Australia 2020 participant.
Cheryl is married with 2 adult children and shares a passion for vintage and classic motor vehicles with her husband, Barry. They have 350 acre beef and sheep property in South Gippsland (currently leased). She has a family interest in an irrigated agriculture enterprise in Deniliquin NSW.
