Code Red Workshop Breakfast
(Tuesday 24 November)

If Australia declared ‘Code Red’ status on climate change and had to reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately at all costs, what would we do?

SSEE have held a series of “Climate Code Red” focus group workshops across Australia to bring groups of engineers, scientists and other professional leaders together in each State to contribute to the development of policy regarding Climate Action, including mitigation measures to avoid climate catastrophe. This will discuss the outcomes of the workshops and provide a summary of the key actions that have been identified.

Tour 1 - Permaculture Tour - SOLD OUT!
This tour takes a look at “Melliodora”: one of the best documented and well known permaculture demonstration sites in Australia. The site is maintained and owned by David Holmgren; one of Australia’s most experienced permaculture site designers.

The tour will examine the passive solar house, mixed food gardens, orchards, dams and livestock, and creek revegetation and will show how permaculture design can help to restore and improve land and provide for residents needs and enjoyment. Lunch & transport included.

Tour 2 - Eco/Sustainable Buildings in the Melbourne CBD
This tour is great for those who want to learn more about Green Buildings in Melbourne. This tour will take a look at 4 green buildings in the Melbourne CBD and examine the novel ways companies and government are tackling water and energy use in these modern buildings. This day also includes lunch at the Council House 2 Restaurant - a restaurant located in the sustainable CH2 building with an emphasis on sustainable, locally produced fare. Lunch included.

Tour 3 - Sustainable Communities
This tour takes will take you to the funky inner suburb of Brunswick just north of the Melbourne CBD. Here we will be visiting CERES Sustainability Park, the Moreland Energy Foundation and Westwyck Eco Housing Sustainable Development to explore how communities can exist with minimum impact using sustainable methods for waste, energy and buildings methods and materials. Lunch & transport included.

Tour 4 - Water and Sanitation
This tour will take us to a treatment plant to take a look at methods used to treat and recycle effluent, biogas and biosolids. The later part of the day also includes a workshop/tour with Melbourne Water. Lunch & transport included. (Don’t worry we won’t be lunching at the Treatment Plant!).

Tour 5 - Energy - SOLD OUT!
This tour will involve traveling out to the La Trobe Valley to participate in a tour of a brown coal mine and a coal power station. After this tour we will be proceeding thought to the Strzecleckis Ranges to Mirboo North, a small town with a big reputation for some of Australia’s finest micro-brew beers. After lunch we will continue through South Gippsland to the Bass Coast to participate in a tour of a commercial wind farm. Lunch & transport included.

Tour 6 - Food & Beverages - CANCELLED
Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses is a 108 year old family business and they see the environment and sustainable business growth as the primary issue for business and community into the future. They have seen an opportunity to not only reduce their own environmental footprint but to help create an infectious awareness in their stakeholders about how they too can help improve the world we live in. You will tour their main bakery at Keilor East and be shown around by the owner Ralph Plarre, who’s passion for sustainability knows no bounds. Following this it’s off to CUB (Carlton United Breweries) for a tour of their Abbotsford Brewery by Rob Greenaway - Manager of Quality Assurance and Environment. Following lunch at the brewery we will head off to a larger facility, still to be confirmed, to look at how they are improving their environmental practices.

Additional Tour - Waubra Wind Farm Project Saturday 21st November

The Waubra Wind Farm Project is the largest renewable power project in the Southern Hemisphere. It is located in Waubra, approximately 35kms North West of Ballarat. The tour will begin at Acciona Energy’s headquarters. After a short presentation and discussion we will jump on a bus destined for the windy hills of Waubra to check out Acciona Energy’s facilities and enjoy a free lunch. Please note safety requires that long pants and closed shoes are worn.
