Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLi) are widely used all over the world to replace inefficient Incandescent Lamps and considered CFLi as an efficient light source to reduce greenhouse emissions. In Australia CFLi, mainly in a Spiral shape, are widely used. This presentation describes the lifetime of Compact Fluorescent Lamps, their influence in reducing greenhouse emissions and how it is achieved. The new technology in place to make CFLi more reliable with longer lifetime and the differences between commonly available CFLi (~6000hrs) compared to longer lifetime CFLi (>12000hrs) are presented. Test results obtained from independent laboratories will be used for comparison purposes. The relevance and influence of other technical parameters and their effect in reducing greenhouse emissions will also be discussed briefly.

Sujendan Thavanathan is a qualified and experienced Director Technical with extensive ‘hands-on’ leadership and teamwork expertise combined with a practical and logical approach to business management. He has a Bachelor of Science - Engineering (Specialisation in Electrical & Electronics) degree from Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka; approval from the Institution of Engineers, Australia as Professional Engineer; is a member of the UK, USA and Australian Engineers Societies; is an Associate Member of The Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand Limited; and is presently doing a Post-Graduate course in Lighting at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.
Sujendan is currently Director Technical at Danson Electronics Ltd and has worked for Danson in China, Hong Kong and Australia. Danson Electronics is a leading manufacturer of quality CFLs from China. He was Product Engineering Manager - 2005-2007 for LKH Lamps Sdn Bhd, Malaysia; Engineering Manager - 2001-2005 Ceyenergy Electronic (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka; Consultant, Engineering - 2001 Lohuis India; and Instructor - 2001 for the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
